GILLI kannada MOVIE REVIEW
Gururaj Jaggesh makes a good debut in remake film Gilli directed by Raghava Loki. Gilli works because of a good story and decent narration. The music and camera work are good. Gilli is a remake of Tamil hit 7G, Rainbow colony which set box office on fire. Despite its flaws, Gilli is a must watch film for a fantastic debut of Gururaj Jaggesh.
Tamil director Selvaraghavan seems to be most popular film director of the Kannada film industry. This seat once occupied by Bhagyaraj and Vikraman have been occupied by Selvaraghavan whose films have all been remade in Kannada except Pudu Pettai. Many sequences in Pudu Pettai have found way in many Kannada films through. Gilli is the remake of 7G, Rainbow Colony directed by Selvaraghavan which revolved around a tragic love story. The subtle emotions found in the original can also be seen in Gilli. Director Raghava Loki has made certain changes to suit the nativity angle here. The film can not be termed as a frame to frame remake.
Gururaj, son of veteran actor Jaggesh who has been a big cinema buff from his younger days. It is interesting to note that Gururaj had scripted 'Make Up' featuring his own father and directed by Singeetham Sreenivasa Rao. An original film deep rooted in the native frontiers could have been a best debut for this young actor, but somehow the producers of Gilli and Jaggesh have felt differently. Despite opting for a remake, the producers of the film Anaji Nagaraj and Jayanna can feel that their efforts have not gone wasted.
A complex subject like 7G, Rainbow Colony is always a difficult to be remade. But to be fair to young director Raghava Loki has tried to take the best out of the debutant actor. However he could have tried to increase the pace of the film. The proceedings in the first half is so slow that you feel helpless in the so called comedy sequences also.
Girish alias Gilli is a wayward son of a hardworking father. He is spends his time with his friends and wastes time always. He falls in love with Arati who stays in his colony. Arati refuses his offer of love and even teaches him a lesson. An agitated Gilli makes amends and takes the advise of his lover to improve. Later Arati starts loving him, but fears that her ailing father may not take kindly to her love affair with Gilli. Later there is a twist in the tale.
Gururaj shows promise in his first film and he fits into the role. Rakul Preethi Singh looks static in many important sequences and delivers the same type of expressions. Gururaj’s younger brother Yethiraj is impressive. It is character actor Sreenivasa Murthy who scores well in his father’s role.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s entire music composition has been lifted from the original. S.Krishna’s camera work is top class. Gilli is a remake film which is good in its music and presentation
